NOTE: If the position is filled at a lower grade level, subsequent promotion to the next grade level will be processed without further competition under the Merit Promotion Program at such time as performance and qualification requirements are met and classification review discloses the duties being performed properly warrant classification to the next higher grade level.
NOTE: This is a supervisory position. Under provision of the Civil Service Reform Act, first-time supervisors are required to serve a probationary period before their appointment becomes final. Those who do not satisfactorily complete the probationary period will be returned to positions of no lower grade and pay than those they occupied before assuming their supervisory assignment.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Under the direction of the Chief of Police, incumbent exercises delegate technical and supervisory responsibilities to plan, direct, implement, evaluate, and coordinate the functions of the Agency Law Enforcement Program. Performs first level supervisory personnel management responsibilities over uniformed police. Supervises three shifts, which provide 24 hour police coverage. Structures assignments and assigns work to subordinates based on priorities and deadlines, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments. Schedules and grants leave. Advises employees, in advance, of performance expectation. Responsible for the operation of the Law Enforcement Program including the inspection of vehicles, equipment, uniforms and attire of staff. As a Federal Police Officer, performs a range of police duties requiring development of police knowledge and skills, and requires some independent judgment and on-the-spot decisions. Responds to calls concerning felonies and misdemeanors under Federal, State, Local and Tribal laws. Investigates, apprehends, arrests, and detains all persons charged with violations. At least 25% of time is involved in completing, usually independently, investigative work that will extend over several days to several weeks.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards and Individual Occupational Requirements for, GL-0083: Police Series).
GL-9: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-8 grade level.
GL-8: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-7 grade level.
GL-7: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-6 grade level.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that provided a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.
SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
OTHER: Incumbent is required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid driver’s license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Position has been submitted for Secondary Law Enforcement Retirement coverage.
This is a testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Interior Drug-Free Workplace Program.
Incumbent must pass a medical examination and the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) annually as part of a physical examination
